1) Video screen :: your RiffTrax and the associated Edits will play here
2) Palette :: all New Edits types are available here; drag or double click to add them to the timeline
3) Button bar :: look here for a range of controls, including play, pause, review, delete, undo, and clear all
4) Timeline :: this is what defines your RiffTrax, use it to set up/refine the order and timing of your Edits. Each edit type (Sound, Caption, Skip | Loop) has its own assigned track.

Broadly, we call the changes you can make "Edits". There are a many tools available:
* Insert Riffs :: Mike, Kevin and Bill have recorded a bunch of funny Riffs for you to insert wherever you choose. They are color coded too: Mike is GREEN, Bill is BLUE, and Kevin is PINK!
* Insert sound effects :: such as mute (turns off the video's soundtrack), funny laughs, applause, farts, and many others. Sounds are color coded YELLOW.
* Add captions :: use this to say whatever you want whenever you want
* Mark skips :: cut out scenes you don't want to see
* Set up loops :: repeat memorable moments
Best of all these Edits can be combined to make your RiffTrax as funny as possible.

Two ways.
* Drag and drop any new Edit (i.e. Mike saying a joke, a Caption, a Skip, the applause sound effect) directly to a specific point on the timeline
* Double click a new Edit and see it placed at the point you are watching. The Edit will land right next to where the timeline's "scrubber" is positioned.

The ability to overlap Edits varies by track.
* Sound track :: you can overlap Riffs, sound effects and mutes any way you want.
* Caption track :: caption Edits cannot overlap, though they can sit right next to each other. If you try to make these Edits overlap, you will notice that the Edit in motion stops when it hits the "wall" of its neighbor.
* Skip | Loop track :: these Edits cannot overlap, though they can sit right next to each other. If you try to make these Edits overlap, notice that the Edit in motion stops when it hits the "wall" of its neighbor.
* In some situations, Skips and Loops will impact the playback and behavior of Edits on the other tracks. learn more

* Skip :: you cannot place a Sound or Caption Edit into the timeslot occupied by an existing Skip edit (this a "no fly zone" and is depicted by a gray shaded area above the Skip). If you add a New Skip so that it overlaps with a previously placed Sound or Caption edit, only the portion of the Sound and Caption edit that lies outside of the "no fly zone" will play.
* Loop :: you can place a Sound or Caption Edit into the timeslot occupied by an existing Loop edit, and you can also add a New Loop so that it overlaps with previously placed Sounds or Captions. However, if the other Edits do not lie completely within the boundaries of the Loop, they will only play once, whereas if they lie completely within they will repeat with each Loop.
